species list, Here at TND we allow for members to pick between five different species of characters. Although it is a fantasy-based world in modern times we've decided to currently limit the types of species we have to prevent characters that are isolated. Although we are open to hearing suggestions for future additions (be them a currently existing creature or a member-made one) we are sticking with our core five. Our species include: Humans Fayes Howlers Sorcerers Rorquals Wyverns
Below is further in depth information of each species group that includes their general characteristics, their capabilities, as well as their place in this fictional society.

humans, Pretty self-explanatory. They are incredibly resourceful for creatures with no special abilities. They don't have supernatural strength or speed. No magic, no superhuman senses. You know, just human. There are some who resent creatures of supernatural abilities, be it one specific race or all of the above. Fortunately in the modernized world they aren't considered above nor below any of the other races, though when it comes to each human's personal opinion on the matter it varies.
A majority of humans stick to jobs that best suit their abilities (or lack thereof) such as retail, construction, the medical field, teaching, and many others. When entering jobs and careers that requires physical training, they are thoroughly taught how to handle every species. Example: a human police officer will be honed into someone who can take down a criminal sorcerer/howler/rorqual/faye in the event there is no immediate help from an officer of the supernatural species. There aren't many limitations on job opportunities, save for species-specific jobs.
Although rare, it has been known that some humans have resorted to hunting certain races, namely Howlers, but it is likely a group that make an expertise in that category. Needless to say, hunting and killing a member of any species is illegal no matter the incentive (revenge, specie-ism, or just sociopathic tendencies).
Another thing to note is that humans can be born to two sorcerer parents. Although some consider them as sort of a defect in the race, it is made easier to label them as human rather than a powerless sorcerer. Humans also have the capabilities to reproduce with a member of any species to produce mixed offspring, although it is generally avoided due to the unannounced prejudice that can leave their kids outcasted from either side of the spectrum.

fayes, Fayes, generally speaking, are an elven species. There aren't much taller than humans, but they normally are slender in build. Though there are some who are a bit on the thicker side they still carry with them a certain kind of grace. Their skin is usually darker, ranging from an olive hue to a dark brown, sometimes with magenta or purple undertones to it. Lighter skinned Fayes are those born with one human parent. Eyes are a natural lighter color, and the species is known for decorating themselves with make-up and accessories. This has led to younger members, born in the generation, to be prone to covering themselves with tattoos and piercings. But, as with humans, to each their own - not every Faye will enjoy body art or accessorizing as much as the next one. They also have slightly pointed ears and long tails like that of a unicorns. As they age, it's at a slower rate than humans. They aren't immortal, but they aren't prone to life-shortening diseases. They can, however, suffer wounds, and require stitches and casts even with a slightly accelerated healing rate. Some Fayes have been known to live up to 200 years, the equivalent age to that of the oldest human. Their appearance ages normally into adulthood until they hit their thirties and forties, where it seemingly halts for several decades. The average age at which Fayes have children tends to fall between 50 and 100 years of age, which some older and even fewer younger. It's extremely rare for Fayes to have more than two kids, usually with a decent age gap between them so they can focus their attention into one child's development without having to divide it. Of course there are outliers to these statistics. Fayes are subject to ridicule and a racial bias as in the history of the land, primarily by sorcerers. While the conflicts of the past have been settled and all species have come together to rebuild and modernize the land, there still remains some acts of prejudice. Their magic isn't like that of a sorcerer's as much as it is enhanced speed and human senses. They are very much in tune with nature, able to use the Earth to predict weather changes or natural disasters, and they can help enhance the growth of vegetation. Their abilities are elemental based, but it is required that the element is present for them to use. I.e. being able to calm the flames of a raging fire or freezing over a stream of water to walk across it. Fayes infiltrate the party scene as they love social gatherings and engaging in fun events. They often throw underground celebrations filled with loud music and bright lights and plenty of liquor. But despite their extroverted nature they do enjoy their time out of the city and getting in touch with nature.

howlers, Howlers, as their name implies, are werewolves. Back in ancient times they were very large and creepy looking creatures, towering over humans and able to stand back on hind legs with arms that were long and gangly with clawed hands. But in time, with the aid of good magic, the darkness has been taken out of their genes and their wolf form is just that: a large wolf. The size of their human form translates into their wolf form, so those who are taller have larger wolf forms. Their eye color remains the same, and their fur color matches their natural human hair color. Their abilities are just hypersensitive senses and heightened strength. They are agile and swift, and physical obstacles do little to deter them. They also bounce back from colds and injuries rather easily, even if they don't heal as quickly as Fayes they are just naturally more tolerant to pain. They are also empathetic to some degree, especially within their own pack, and many find companionship in humans. Some say it's because it helps Howlers feel as though they fit in despite their animalistic side, and others say its because Howlers find humans endearing with their vulnerability. A lot of Howlers are known to be a part of a pack of some sort, with an Alpha hierarchy in place. Those in packs are expected to remain loyal to their packmates and don't meddle with rogues and rivaling packs. Territory is a blurred issue as the city they all reside in is massive, but it is expected neighboring packs down wander in too deeply to other pack quarters. How rogues are treated is determined by the specific pack and its rules as well as the individual wolf who stumbles upon another. But, as civility and union is a pressing matter amongst all the species pack rivalries and wandering rogues rarely result in violence beyond anything that can be compared to a rowdy gang of high school boys. Transformation is entirely voluntary save for the day of the full moon, in which case Howlers are expected to restrain themselves as to not risk harming an innocent civilian in their uncontrolled state. Nights of the full moon law enforcement patrols are heavier, and officers are trained to disable and detain any Howlers that escaped their homes and punishment will be served as the judge sees fit. The only other way a transformation is involuntary is in times of high stress or danger, but the Howler's human mind is still conscience after that shift. When it comes to jobs Howlers don't have many limitations. They go through a more strict training and testing process for high stress jobs simply for the fact they can involuntarily shift. For that reason, Howlers rarely go for jobs in law enforcement or the medical field and even food service or retail job bosses will turn down young Howler applicants. sorcerers, Sorcerers look exactly like humans. They can pass as a non-magical species very easily, as the only difference between them and humans is their ability to perform magical spells. Sorcerers come in all different shapes and sizes, even without their abilities to change their appearances to some degree, and one of the only traits that can give away their race is their eye color. This doesn't go for every sorcerer, but some have been known to have a deep red or a bright golden color when tapping into their abilities.
They don't have any superhuman strength or hypersensitive senses. Depending on a sorcerer's age and area of focus their magic can be used for telekinesis, teleportation, matter manipulation, and a sort of telepathic power. They can't read the minds of others but they can place their own thoughts into another's head if they wish. Like humans they can choose whichever career path they please, with little to no limitations. Species specific jobs are pretty much the only path they can't take when it comes to a future career.
There are some elitist groups that only accept and mingle with pure-blooded sorcerers, and turn their noses up to half-bloods or sorcerers who mingle with humans. Most groups have vanished as a high percentage of the population has some bit of another species mixed in their bloodline, but in the larger cities there seems to at least be one exclusive club to be found.
Outside of the elite pure-bloods there are far more sorcerers who are mixed in some way, and therefore don't follow a strict guideline when it comes to procreating. Families still follow a general air of class, keeping to the rules and trying to present themselves in a cleaned up and uppity manner. They are also known to have small animal companions of some sort, after the animal chooses them that is.
Out of all of the species they are the ones to be most likely unwelcoming towards Faye's due to the history between their species. The intolerance can also be fear based as Fayes harbor the ability of elemental magic, which sorcerers don't. They also find the Faye's unruly and loud party nature classless.

rorquals, Rorquals are half-giants, but while they can seem intimidating and dangerous they are the complete opposite. They are gentle and great with animals. It isn't unlikely for birds to perch on their shoulders or deer to calmly graze nearby. They are very strong and for that reason stay in physically demanding jobs, but most find their homes in the suburbs. They are most commonly found in construction, and more so in farming. This doesn't mean there aren't any Rorquals that work in creative fields or in office jobs.
Rorquals don't harbor any form of magical prowess whatsoever. Their abilities lie in their strength as in the past they are thought to have built towns in between mountain passes they dug out. They are the earth builders who carved through the land and taught other species how to grow crops and raise livestock. Because of how they respect the land and all of the creatures on it, it's a common belief that they were the first species to walk the earth.
The average height of a Rorqual in between 6'2" and 7'. Any one smaller than 5'10" is considered small for their size. Aside from their stature they look just like humans. They don't have excessive body hair, nor do they wear furs or look cave man esq. They aren't very gender conforming in that it is all equal contribution when it comes to work and supporting a family. Men and women alike are welcome in all job duties and whichever choices they make aren't frowned upon so long as they are contributing in the best way they can. They also usually have large families.
They are very traditional in that they stick to their holiday celebrations and despite it being modern day stick with their old beliefs. Rorquals are also a very peaceful species, choosing compromise over conflict. They are exceptional at gardening and many practice a vegetarian lifestyle, if not vegan due to their belief that all life is sacred. They hold a certain adoration for Howlers and Humans, and they share a mutual respect with Fayes. They aren't particularly fond of Wyverns due to their confrontational approach to life, and Sorcerers because Rorquals do believe they are rather elitist.

wyverns, Wyverns are a species believed to have derived from the dragons that used to roam the land so freely. While the appearances and populations of dragons near civilized areas steadily declined over the years, Wyverns exist and thrive like any other species on the continent. They appear much like humans, save for the golden hue of their eyes that can look even cat-like when they are threatened or angry. They also have sharp claws on their hands that aren't retractable and fang-like canines. Some even have horns of a variety of styles on their head, though this has become less prominent in the species in modern times.
Their skin is a little rougher with a layer of scales underneath that protects them from superficial wounds. When wounded the scales glimmer under the surface in a glowing pattern. Aside from that, Wyverns are comfortable around fire and can even control it when the element is present. They can also communicate with dragon-like and reptilian creatures. Their physical stamina and agility are heightened, as is their stealth.
In the past, humans who believed Wyverns were the reason behind dragons destroying their homes attacked villages and enslaved them. For this reason Wyverns hold a certain distaste towards humans. Some even avoid all interaction with them by keeping their young home schooled and out of society. When it comes to Rorquals, although quite their opposite, and Fayes Wyverns are indifferent due to their similar histories. They avoid Sorcerers out of fear as they are the only species that can so easily subdue an adult Wyvern.
When young Wyverns age and reach their later teens they are expected to perform a coming of age ceremony that is even celebrated in modern times in which case they go out into the wilderness and make their first large hunting kill on their own. Wyverns are a warrior race that enjoys hunting which is why the largest part of their population lives closer to the wilderness. They are a meat-loving species that find the Rorquals peace-loving ways primitive. They still respect the farms nearby and will trade with them for resources they might need. They are weak to the cold and express symptoms that are similar to hibernation and grow sluggish and some even grumpy.
